Instructions for Parent, Teacher or Helper

Note: Students with learning challenges need ongoing and consistent review of learned skills.

1For each card, say the word out loud to your student 3 or 4 times. Then read the sentence several times too. Do this as many times as your student needs to learn the word. *Cool fact*: Your student can have fun with the Listen button and practice on his own once you’ve completed these instructions together a few times.

2Discuss and explore how the pictures within the letters are linked to the shapes of the letters. For example, you’ll often find pictures of girls on the A’s, boys on the O’s and houses on the H’s.

3Have your student say the word and then repeat the sentence as close to how it is spoken as possible. It’s best for your student to look at the word at the same time she says the sentence.

4Hold the card in front of your student just above eye level, so his eyes are pointed slightly upward. Ask your student to study the details of the drawings in the word, take a mental picture of the whole word and then see the word with eyes closed.

5Create a game with your student: How many details can he or she remember about the word and the images within the word?

6When ready to spell the word without looking at the card, have your student spell it out loud. Then, have her write it down on paper, saying each letter while writing it.

7If your student doesn’t remember the correct spelling of the word, go back and review it together. Have your student try to recall the sentence that went with it.

8Practice three words at a time with your student with the goal of mastering them.  For optimal results, work on words 5 days per week to enhance long-term memory.

Your student has achieved mastery when she can spell a word 100% correctly over three separate study sessions.

9When a word has been mastered, stop working on it and introduce another word.

10For best long-term results, return to the words that your student has mastered in the past and work with them again.

[•] First, write a sight word on an index card or piece of paper, copying the style of the letters on the See to Spell flashcard. Then have your student read the word if they can, or, read it for her. Have her trace each letter of the word with the “wrong” end of a pencil or pen, saying the name of each letter as she traces it. Then have her say the whole word while she underlines it on the paper. Repeat the process two more times.

[•] Have your student trace the letters of the word on a table with his finger. Have him name each letter out loud as he writes it and then say the whole word while underlining it. Repeat two more times.

[•] While your student is spelling a word, have him lightly tap his arm once for each letter in the word, moving closer and closer to his hand. Then have him read the word one more time and at the same time, slide his hand from the opposite shoulder to wrist. Repeat two more times.
